I predict more websites and apps will have “dark modes” in the coming year – at least as an toggle option if not a full design overhaul. Dark Mode involves using white or light-colored text and foreground elements on dark backgrounds for webpages, apps, and operating systems. Everything from MacOS to Facebook has the option with more to come. Using a dark background can be easier on the eyes in lower light settings – which is important given how much screen time the average person puts in on any given day. Dark Mode can also persevere the battery life of our mobile devices – especially on OLED displays.

There will be changes in customer experiences at some stores. We’re going to see the transition to more digital-focused solutions. Digital payments will excel faster and I think we may even see “drive-thrus” in places of business we have not previously seen. I think with businesses being shut down, we may see many business owners find a way to re-bridge the gaps in various ways to reconnect with their customers.

We’ll also likely see more company-to-company partnerships, such as Adidas’ collaborations with Lego and Allbirds. Unexpected partnerships between corporate brands capture media attention, generate social buzz and allow for cross-marketing to customer bases—without celebrity endorsement fees, all of which play well in an era of hard-to-capture consumer attention and tightened budgets.

Prediction 1: More people will settle in rural areas because as long as their internet can hold a signal they can work from anywhere they would like to live. Which also means that continuing to adapt to a hybrid or a remote work model, businesses will have access to a larger talent pool.

Prediction 2: Design-wise, anything that evokes nostalgia will continue to trend into 2021. Zoom fatigue, digital clutter, and just overall screen time will have people yearning for simpler times and simpler design.

I believe that brands are going to take a more personalized and thoughtful approach to their marketing. After this year, we’ve realized how important empathy and caring is. Also, the digital marketing space is going to grow in leaps and bounds. Since that is the most targeted and safe approach for brands, new capabilities are going to come out.
